Angel of Užupis Guide

The Guardian of a Free Republic: Angel of Užupis Guide

The Angel of Užupis is a modern sculpture and a symbol of the self-declared Republic of Užupis, a small, independent district within Vilnius. This gleaming bronze statue, unveiled in 2002, replaced a temporary sculpture of a gnome and has quickly become one of the most recognizable landmarks in the area. It represents the spirit of freedom, creativity, and openness that defines Užupis. While the Angel itself is relatively new, the spirit it embodies has roots in the artistic and bohemian history of Užupis. After Lithuania regained its independence in 1990, artists and intellectuals began to settle in the neglected district, transforming it into a haven for creativity. On April 1st, 1997 (April Fool's Day), they declared Užupis an independent republic, complete with its own constitution, president, and even an army (of 12 men). The Angel serves as a constant reminder of this unique identity. Visitors to the Angel of Užupis often take photos with the statue and reflect on the values it represents. The surrounding area is filled with art galleries, cafes, and workshops, making it a perfect place to explore the creative heart of Vilnius. You can also pick up a copy of the Užupis Constitution, translated into numerous languages, and learn more about the republic's quirky laws and philosophy. While Užupis doesn't have a specific culinary tradition tied directly to the Angel, the district is known for its eclectic mix of restaurants and cafes offering everything from traditional Lithuanian cuisine to international flavors.

Transportation

The Angel of Užupis is easily accessible on foot from the Old Town of Vilnius. You can also take bus routes 10, 11, 33, 89 to the Užupis stop, which is a short walk from the statue.
